How to develop your privacy strategy?
A "3-2-1-1 data protection strategy" is an effective way to securely store and protect data to minimise the loss or corruption of important information. This strategy consists of four steps, which are:
3 copies: three separate copies of the data should be created. These three copies contain the same data and should preferably be stored in different locations or on different devices. If one of the copies is damaged or lost, the other two copies will still be available.
2 different media: The data should be stored on two different data storage devices. This means that one copy of the data can be on a server for example, while the other copy can be on an external hard drive / tape / NAS. This method provides protection against technical errors, data loss or compatibility problems.
1 off-site copy: at least one copy of the data must be stored on a data storage device off-site, i.e. physically located at a different site. This step provides protection against cybercriminals and natural disasters/accidents.
1 immutable copy: a copy of the data must be placed on a storage that does not allow modification or overwriting of the data (immutable). This guarantees that the data cannot be accidentally or intentionally altered or deleted.
